We fondly remember Irene, a genuine Make Piece star, who passed away unexpectedly in February 2006. She suffered a number of health problems but the passing of this vibrant woman was a shock nevertheless. She will be sorely missed by the entire Make Piece family as well as her own family and the many elderly people for whom she cared.
As a hyperactive child in New Orleans, LA, Irene learned many skills and crafts at her mother's side: crocheting, how to cook a good meal and how to clean house. She capitalized on her cooking skills, supporting herself as a chef until an automobile accident left her unable to carry pots and pans. She began to market crocheted hats and baby sets under her "Especially for You" brand, an endeavor she piloted in the 70's.
She said, "Creativity has never been a problem for me, but I was having some difficulties with marketing. In February 2002, I enrolled in classes offered by Make Piece, a community based program, teaching entrepreneurship through jewelry making. Make Piece has helped me develop my marketing abilities immensely. Through the organization, I have also been blessed with the opportunity to train other artists and encourage them to reach their potential and share their skills with the others. There is nothing more satisfying, when I look on the face of some I served, than to see an expression of appreciation & satisfaction." |
