We’re live with a brand new site!

Check Us Out!

We’re TIRED but we’re happy!  Atiq and his crew, our Board Member Amanda, and I have been working around the clock to unveil our new looks.  At our makepiece.org home and at our blog, Make Piece Moments.  We’ve gotten great feedback from everyone who has had a sneak peek at the progress.  But it’s YOU, our visitors and customers, whose reactions are most meaningful to us.  Please send us your comments, suggestions, and any problems that need fixing.  As we’re bleary-eyed from late nights, we’re sure there are probably lots of bugs in the system.  Please let us know so we can fix them as soon as possible.

New Site with Blog

Welcome to our new web site & the new home for our blog, Make Piece Moments. Thanks to our creative and diligent programmer Atiq, we’ve got a fresh new look and more consolidated presence. Let us know what you think!!

We’re partial to memories & we wouldn’t want to forget what’s gone before. So all of our old blog entries have been imported here. That way, you — and we — can access the old content easily.

Getting Down to the Nitty Gritty

Ken got right down to the nitty gritty last night:  the easy but important legal and financial steps for setting up your own jewelry business.  Phew, what a sentence!  If that didn’t make your head spin, read on! (For those of you that were expecting marketing news, we made a mistake–it’s next week!)

Ken Teaching the Hard Stuff

Ken Teaching the Hard Stuff

There are lots of little steps that need to be taken in order to set up a business.  Ken presented them in a very organized and easy-to-follow manner.  He elaborated on each and every point, giving step-by-step instructions for registering your business’s name, logo, trademarks, licenses, etc.  He even explained how to acquire a resale tax number, and how to deal with selling and sales tax in multiple states.  Here in DC, we get that problem a lot; oftentimes the show is in Maryland and the customer is from Virginia, or vice versa, and the seller needs to understand what to charge.

Ken masterfully navigated the students through what could have been mumbo-jumbo.  Instead, he had everyone nodding and understanding, even when he got to the IRS regulations!  Other good notes included how to set up a business bank account and custom jewelry business plans.  After last night’s class, we want to make sure to give Ken an extra thank you!  You’re doing an incredible job!

For Miss Lisa’s portion of the class, the practicing continued.  Crimping, then the wire wrapping, and of course there was more talk of James’s secret plans for his jewelry line!  You can see the happiness oozing out from the students.  They are learning so much and really enjoying themselves.  Plus, how can they not be excited when Miss Lisa revealed Tuesday’s surprise: free jewelry-making day!  The students are allowed to bring in their own materials and make whatever they want!  This will be the first time that they are unleashing their newly acquired skills and creativity on their own supplies.  We’re so excited to see what they create!

Catch up with us next week as we bring you photos of their original designs and personal interviews!  We’ll be doing feature articles on current students and graduates soon, so stay tuned!

Romancing the Stone

Last night’s class was all about romancing the stone, enhancing the design of a piece with metal accents and fancy finishings.  Miss Lisa brought in a black velvet box with Make Piece’s favorite clasps and accent beads, including a stunning magnetic rainbow Swarovski clasp and Bali silver beads.  The class oohed and ahhed at all of the lovely choices.  You could see the wheels churning and turning in their heads as they thought of ways to use them in their own pieces.  We’ve got some dreamers!  Right now, the class uses fishing wire and glass beads, but soon, when their skills improve, they will be able to graduate to the good stuff!

The class also got pretty creative with their crimping and wire-wrapping last night.

You can see how all of their practice and hard work is paying off!  Here’s a picture of LaVita showing off her wire-wrapping skills.

Last night James also revealed that he has 30 original designs sketched out waiting to be made!  His plans on selling them to a national store made the class chuckle, but he’s serious!  We believe his sincerity, and look forward to seeing his name on famous labels in the future.

Marketing is on tomorrow night’s agenda, and there’s a surprise for next Tuesday’s class–so stay tuned for stories and photos!

Let’s Get Down to Business

Digestion of last night’s class was hard: the how-to’s of a business plan.  The idea of starting a business sounds like a lot of fun–marketing your product or service, coming up with creative taglines and branding art, etc–until you realize that’s only the half of it.

Last night Ken broke the news: in order to get loans, funding, partners, leases with landlords, and expanding the business, you need a business plan and they certainly aren’t easy to make.   One would think that the students would be scared or worried, but they were rapt with attention, soaking up Ken’s every word.  Pages of notes were taken.  Our students are serious!  They are more than willing to take the hard stuff with the fun.

In fact, they are brimming with ideas and excited about the process.  Our students discussed entrepreneurial ideas, spurning a great discussion about word of mouth, promotion techniques, and cash flow within the business.  Ken emphasized the hope that despite money flowing in and out every month, that there is some left over for paying the bills!

Another big point Ken drove home was after the lengthy business plan has been written, how can you sell it in ten words or less?  Would “Here come buy my jewelry?” catch your ear and eye, or would “Handmade jewelry with stones from Tanzania?”  Coming up with something interesting and ear-catching is key.

Malik had an idea: “I’ll pretend to be Afghany, the accent and all,” as he switches into an unidentifiable central Asian accent, “I’m escaping the bombing, you know, and I, ehh, need food and money for my family to, ehh, bring them over….”  Sitting right next to him, Delinda adds what we’re all thinking, “I’ve got to watch out for you!”

Mother and Daughter Mastering the Crimp

Mother and Daughter Mastering the Crimp

After such an intense class, it was time for “jewelry surgery” as James, a new student exclaimed.  Two other new students got a private lesson from Miss Lisa while the others continued their practicing of the crimp and the wire wrapping.

On Tuesday, the students will be unveiling their gemstone reports and working on their unique designs.  And we can’t forget that dang wire-wrapping–it’s tough!

We’ll have more photos up next week, as the internet kept breaking up today.  Until next week–have a good weekend!

Wrapped Up But Not Wiped Out

Laughter accompanies every Make Piece class.  Whether it’s from a failed attempt at a wire wrapping or a story that brings everyone to tears, laughter punctuates the stern silence of determined students practicing their skills.

Last night was not an exception, especially with the entrance of a new student, James, who came in beaming from ear to ear.  So anxious to get started, with high hopes of starting his own jewelry business, he got right to work and mastered the crimp quickly.

The wire-wrapping brigade continued with multiple attempts by each student.  Some had their exciting moments only to be dashed by the following attempt.  Then the one after would be great again!  The students will agree: wire wrapping is not easy.  Remember that headpin we showed you last week?  Here’s their progress and practice:

LaVita, so thrilled with Lisa’s pronouncement of a perfect wire-wrapping almost flipped over the work table!  Now we know we have to bolt down the tables…  Denise also perfected the wire wrap moments later, and while thoroughly enthused, we didn’t have to hold down the tables.  The others are definitely making galiant strides.  Let’s hope a couple of days without practice won’t hurt them too much!

Student vs Teacher

Student vs Teacher

We’re proud to show you our students’ progress.  As you can see, they are a hardworking bunch.  Tomorrow night, Ken, our Entrepreneurship teacher, comes back for some more business skills.  We’re looking forward to his class, and more practicing.  Check back for more updates!

Let the Business Begin!

Tough Questions. Good Answers.

Tough Questions. Good Answers.

Beginning a business is a daunting task. It requires more than just adequate start-up capital, analysis of the market, and a good product or idea. Starting a business necessitates self-analysis and defining one’s objectives. These are tough questions. Our Entrepreneurship teacher, Ken Weiss, did not hesitate to ask them. In fact, he started the class with a profile analysis in order to bring awareness to what each of the students know about their own weaknesses. The profile asked questions ranging from knowledge of the field and it’s competition, to the ability to make deadlines, to motivation and more.

Goals and previous business ventures were discussed. One of the students expressed that she came to the Make Piece course because she wanted to “learn everything” about running her own business. “I’m ready. I brought my stuff to work one day and sold out! I didn’t have anything to take home–only orders to match their pieces!!” We’ll keep you posted about her business, as she wants to keep the name a secret until she gets everything together. (We’ll give you a hint–the name is from her grandmother.)

Another student discussed that her reason for taking the course was to teach her daughter the tricks of the trade. “My daughter is very hyper and making things really calms her. I want to show my support for her starting her own business.” There is clearly so much love within Make Piece!

After Ken left, the students went back to practicing wire-wrapping. Lisa reports that the wire-wrapping is getting better, but those circles at the top look a little squiggly. Right now the focus is on tightness and uniform wrapping, with no overlapping of the wire. Later, she’ll enforce the perfect circle rule. Any of you give wire-wrapping a shot since our last post? We’d love to see some of your examples!

That’s it for now. Stay tuned for Wednesday, when we’ll have reports of wire-wrapping progress and gemstone homework. Happy Friday!
